On November 18, Caraga State University through its Center for Geo-Informatics (CCGeo), in partnership with the Department of Geodetic Engineering, College of Engineering and Geosciences (CEGS), celebrating GIS Day 2020 through a FREE webinar on “Beyond Surveying: Geodetic Engineers at the Forefront of Research and Innovations in Geospatial Science and Technology”. This webinar is already the 3rd in the Geo-Informatics Seminar Series organized by CCGeo, and was held via Zoom and Facebook Live from 1:00 – 5:30 PM. The webinar was financially supported by the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD).

GIS Day is an annual event celebrating the technology of geographic information systems. It “provides an international forum for users of GIS technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society.” For more information about GIS Day 2020, you may refer to https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/a8591f1541df4846832e19dd1aabfebe. The webinar is just one of the listed GIS Day events in the Philippines.

The webinar highlighted the works of Geodetic Engineers (GEs) as researchers and innovators in the field of geospatial science and technology. It also aims to provide a venue for Geodetic Engineers to get perspectives and discuss the other equally important roles of GEs as researchers and innovators of geospatial science and technology, and how GEs can also contribute for the betterment of our society through involvement in this other area of the profession beyond Surveying. The webinar was applied for accreditation by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) as a Continuing Professional Development Program (CPD) for Geodetic Engineers. The CPD Council for Geodetic Engineering has deliberated to give the webinar 4 CPD Credit Units, which means that GEs may earn these units if they participated in the webinar via Zoom. Please refer to the “Notice on Earning of CPD Credit Units” in page 3 for more details.

During the webinar, three (3) distinguished GE resource speakers talked about a wide range of topics ranging from geodesy to geospatial science and technology applications in environmental monitoring and resource assessment. Dr. Czar Jakiri S. Sarmiento, an Assistant Professor of the UP Diliman Department of Geodetic Engineering talked about “Birthing New Paradigms in Philippine Geodesy”. Meanwhile, Dr. Jeark A. Principe, also an Assistant Professor  of UP Diliman Department of Geodetic Engineering, discussed the application of geomatics for regional scale assessment of solar photo-voltaic (PV) power potential. The last speaker was Engr. Mari Trix L. Estomata, a GIS Specialist of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH Philippines. Engr. Estomata discuseed the application of Remote Sensing for forest cover monitoring in the Philippines.

The webinar attracted more than 400 participants coming from the Geodetic Engineering profession, from the academe, government agencies and non-government organizations, and students.
